Answering my own questions about 44-year old photos

Sunday morning. A bit of time on my hands, so I pulled out an old drive and started looking through scanned photos from the 1980s.

Two photos caught my attention. I had no direct memory, but a stirring way back in my mind suggesting I should know who this was. That niggle of memory led me to upload the photos to a private Facebook group of alumni of the American Friends Service Committee along with a request for assistance in identifying the person and the location.

I served on the AFSC staff here in Hawaii in the 1970s, and then served on regional and national committees until I was hired as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1993.

Here’s my original post to the Alumni group.

I just ran across these two old photos, and am trying to identify who this is and where her AFSC office was. I am guessing the photos were taken somewhere between the early 1980s and early 1990s, but it could have been earlier. I have a vague recollection that it might have been in western Massachusetts, but my wife draws a blank, so that may be my hallucination.

I told Meda that I have a vague memory of driving from Boston to one of the small colleges in Western Massachusetts, but it didn’t ring any bells for her, and I couldn’t dredge up anything more specific.

But then I turned to one of her long lists of professional academic accomplishments that luckily included a list of papers presented at conferences.

And there it was!

Chesney-Lind, Meda. “From Benign Neglect to Malign Attention: A Critical Review of Research Trends in Female Delinquency.” Paper presented at “Who Speaks for Young Girls Today?” A National Seminar on the Needs of Young Women, Smith College, July, 1981.

Smith is a private liberal arts women’s college located in Northampton, Massachusetts,

I knew that the answer to my own question was very near.

My next search used the search terms “Northampton,” “American Friends Service Committee,” and the year, 1981.

And that sealed the deal.

It led me to the AFSC Quaker Service Bulletin, Fall 1981 issue, and a photo of Frances Crowe, easily recognized as the woman in my photos.

AFSC Northampton

I had answered my own question about the person and the location.

And it took only about 15 minutes from posting the original request for help, and finding the answers myself.

Smith College also proved to be the location of several photos of Meda that we hadn’t been able to identify previously, including this one outside a building with part of th name showing, “Franklin King.”

A quick search for Smith College and Franklin King determined that this is Franklin King House, a well-known dormitory on the college campus.

Still unanswered: Who are the other two women with Meda in this photo, taken during the same few days at Smith College in 1981.

Thinking inside the box this Feline Friday

This was the week dominated by the most recently delivered box from Amazon, as you’ll see in the photos.

Kali was Alpha Cat as far as the box went. She noticed it sometime in Day 1, and quickly hopped in and settled down. Then she began tearing up the brown packing paper in the box, methodically shredding it into smaller and smaller bits. Not all at once. A few minutes here, a few minutes later, in between naps, food, etc. That process has taken most of the week.

Kali’s work apparently turned the box, and it’s shredded paper, into a perfect cat nest.

She displayed real skill. The shredded paper all stayed in the box, not tossed around onto the floor. So this was intentional!

It was like she was preparing to welcome kittens, although she lost the necessary plumbing long ago.

When Kali vacated the box, all the cats checked it out, but only Kiko climbed in and made herself comfortable, apparently participating in the box worship.

So at least for now, we can’t throw the box away. We had to move it to clean, but we’ll have to return it to its prime spot in the living room.

Some boxes are good for an hour, then lose all appeal. But this box appears to have some special allure, although I don’t know what it might be.

A Wednesday morning moment

Waialae Beach Park is located at the eastern end of Kahala Avenue, on the opposite site of Diamond Head from the visitor center of Waikiki.

It’s where we start our daily walks at dawn.

Every day is different. The light, colors, wind, tides, all interact to create unique moments out of familiar elements.

This photo was taken this morning (Wednesday, August 20). Just beyond the bridge, Waialae Stream empties into Maunalua Bay, which stretches from Koko Head to Black Point on Oahu’s southeastern coast. The sun was rising off to the left, out of the photo.

Feline Friday is a state holiday!

Well, not exactly. It is Feline Friday, and it is a state holiday. But the holiday happens to commemorate Statehood Day rather than Feline Friday. But I haven’t broken the news to the cats. It would be a letdown.

The only real news is that poor Kiko had the sneezes for several days this week. It started on Sunday or Monday, and continued through Wednesday. Bouts of sneezes. Sometimes one, two, three. Then she would stop, shake her head a bit, and lick her nose. It worried us, but she didn’t have any additional worrying symtoms. No drool from eyes or nose (although each sneeze did spray a little!). No open mouth breathing. So we crossed our fingers that it was just a kitty cold and not a more serious respiratory infection, which can also cause sneezing.

Today it seems to have passed. We’ve been hovering over her most of the day, and I don’t know if she sneezed at all. Suddenly it was gone. Just in time to save her from a precautionary vet visit. Way to go, Kiko!

We do have to be careful because Kinikini has tested positive for Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). It means that we have to take any kind of infection seriously and get him to the vet, as infections that would normally be routine could be dangerous for him. He?s been with us for over four years, and so far all is well.

Okay. You’re in luck. It was a good week for photos, and I took a lot of them.

So on with the show!
