Calvin Say in deep musubi on conflict charges

Pacific Business News had a fascinating story Nov. 13 about allegations of a conflict of interest by House Speaker Calvin Say on a bill he had passed to benefit a company in which he has a financial interest.
House Bill 1593, introduced by Say and approved by the full House 43 to 7, essentially requires Massachusetts-based HRPT Properties Trust to provide more favorable leases to tenants of a Mapunapuna building HRPT acquired from the Damon Estate.
Among the tenants benefiting is Warabeya U.S.A., Inc., which uses the property for its musubi-manufacturing subsidiary Tokyo Bento Nichiyo. Say is an officer of Warabeya and is paid $1,000 a month.
HRPT has sued the state in federal court, contending the measure is unconstitutional because of its alleged narrow application to HRPT and its interference with private contract negotiations. HRPT’s motion for summary judgment is scheduled to be heard Dec. 7.
The company raised the conflict-of-interest allegations against Say in a footnote contending that he introduced the measure and voted on it without disclosing his personal interest, possibly in violation of House rules.
Say told PBN it wasn’t a conflict because “this was a class of lessees throughout the state.”
The speaker also said, “I’m just an officer in title. I’m not there for any daily operations.”
The “no” votes on the bill were mostly dissident Democrats who have opposed Say’s leadership.

A memo has been issued by the Hawai‘i Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF) explaining why some employees received “welcoming letters” and new membership cards from health plan carriers that they did not enroll with: http://www.hawaii.edu/ohr/downtemp/EUTF%20Open%20Enrollment%2002-02-10.pdf. As in past years, some EC-1 forms were not processed by the cut-off date, and as in past years, employees will receive their medical services and benefits pursuant to the EC-1 form that was submitted. If the EUTF made an error in the processing of the EC-1 form, the billing will be retroactively adjusted. Documents will be processed by the EUTF as soon as possible.
Do you know when the new health care insurance reform will be adopted by the state EUTF? As it is now, according to HMSA, all family dependents under age 26 who are no longer full-time students are ineligible to remain on their family insurance plan.

Great writing but navigation on this blog makes it hard to cherry pick the politically juicy entries from Kaaawa / cat entries. For example, stumbled upon great entry regarding deciphering lobbyists / legislators gifts, but only because I clicked on “Archives” and had the patience to sift through a couple of days of entries.
You should try the “Categories” link, now moved up to the top in the right sidebar. There you can select “politics”, “campaigns”, “ethics”, etc. while avoiding (if you choose) the cats and dogs of Kaaawa.

Hi Ian. Whatever happened to the investigation into Sri Shim’s death? Did trey albrecht fully recover? What’s the status of the familiy’s lawsuit?
Was a diving flag flown at the time of the incident? Who owns/owned the inflatable? Who insured it? What was/is Sai Hansen’s position/role in the cult?
Odd second day in a row no Star-Advertiser not online at all whats going on. No Obituaries to read, how will we know who is dead or alive?
Are they kaput, fenito, dead? Not even for pay!
We must demand DOH run or designate website for Obits, who died?

Yes, she appears to be a beagle mix. She was a Humane Society dog. Very high energy, but also very good spirits!
