One-time Star-Bulletin photographer Dick Schmidt spotted the photos by Clarence Maki among my dad’s collection and went digging into his own stacks of yellow Kodak photo paper boxes which store his old photographs.

Dick writes:

It was in one of those yellow boxes today that I found a print of Clarence Maki I remembered shooting in 1971. Clarence had won the Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Grand Prize, 1971, and SB Chief Photog Warren Roll presented him his check ($500, big money, early 70s, from corporate powerhouse, Eastman Kodak) for his winning photo. Thought you’d enjoy seeing.

Schmidt added:

It just keeps getting better, your layers of discoveries in the old-timey photos of your Dad’s collection…. Kudos for taking on the considerable labor-intensive and time-demanding job of scanning, identifying, organizing and putting them out there for others to absorb, these servings of Honolulu history.
