Okay. I’ll agree that closing certain parks after 10 p.m. is a reasonable security policy.

But almost routinely failing to open them in the morning is a real disservice to the public.

That’s what’s been happening at Waialae Beach Park. The closings started after a series of incidents of vandalism in the park restrooms. Security cameras were also installed.

The park closes at 10 p.m., at least according to the posted sign. It is supposed to reopen at 5 a.m. That would be early enough for most park users.

But this morning at 7 a.m., the parking lot was still locked, and there were a number of park users in their vehicles on the street, waiting to be able to access the parking lot.

I wish I could say this was unusual. But most of this past week, for example, it was still locked at 6 a.m. when we first walked past.

According to news accounts, the task of opening and closing parks was contracted out to a private company. Well, folks, they’re not doing their job.
