Honolulu Weekly is a day late in reaching readers this week, courtesy of the breakdown of the press over at MidWeek, which prints the independent paper. The issue normally hits street racks on Wednesday morning, but this week won’t be getting there until today.

A reader passed along this comment concerning the flap (mentioned here yesterday) over a recent Star-Bulletin editorial on the Bob Awana case, which described a story in the rival Honolulu Advertiser as “planted”.

If — big IF — the Tizer folks got a copy of the same email that went to Maui Times, it contained details of the indictment, which they left out of the story. If they knew it, then that omission was purposeful. In which case, they’re Awana’s cheering section. Also, if they had simply Googled Awana’s name while writing the story, the English-language press in India already had the details. It’s a sloppy story with a single source, and that source is the subject of the story. What kind of journalism is that?

But was it “planted?” The Tizer may not recognize a planted story when they run one. But then they’re the guys who run verbatim press releases as “breaking news.”

That’s all beside the point. The Star-Bulletin editorial was about Awana and how he conducts himself, not about the Advertiser. That conduct apparently includes handing the Advertiser a fat, steaming one and telling them to run with it, which they did without doing their homework.

The Advertiser got sucker-punched by Awana, not by their competition.

Is the Advertiser due an apology? Not from this reader’s perspective.

My old friend Gene Stoltzfus continues to fill his blog with bits of wisdom gleaned from a life spent trying to understand and, in small ways, counter the violence wrought by nation states. Yesterday’s essay, “Death counts I have watched,” deserves reading, as do so many of Gene’s writings.

It started cloudy and gray yesterday. Apart from requiring that we carry umbrellas, just in case, the clouds and occasional drizzle don’t interfere with our early morning walks. The dogs wait for their biscuits, rain or shine. The vistas are wonderful in bright sun or rain.
