Here’s my Project Sunshine update. I made a bit of progress yesterday with Lotus Notes, after locating a demo version that runs on my MacBook Pro. On my first try, I went through a long 190 MB download on a somewhat slower than desired Internet connection, only to discover that it required the latest Mac system software, which I haven’t installed yet. But a helpful reader pointed me to an earlier version, which is able to open the emails provided by the governor’s office. Hundreds of emails. Mostly routine. Some interesting. Now I’m searching for a way to export them into a document that can be shared. More work. We’ll see.

The independent Gannett Blog reports that while the company’s stock price has tanked and newsrooms across the country have faced cutbacks, CEO Craig Dubow received a $1.75 million bonus, more than doubling his pay.

The ruling of a National Labor Relations Board judge regarding the Hawaii Tribune-Herald’s illegal anti-union actions was reported this week by Editor & Publisher.

A New York Times story yesterday reported on Barack Obama’s requests for earmarks, while ignoring Hillary Clinton’s earmark record because she has so far not made her requests public. But a quick dip into the Seattle Times’ earmarks database turns out at least the Clinton earmarks that successfully made it into the budget.

One of those resulted in a $4 million appropriation to Northrop Grumman Amherst for “weapons range support equipment” for use at the Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island, with part of the funding going to Hawaii Community College. Very interesting. You just never know what you’re going to find in these things.

Meda highly recommended this little NPR essay about a parrot’s love affair with its person. It reminds us both of our feelings towards Leo, our most neurotic cat who pees in inappropriate places to get the attention he craves.
