Christy Martin, public information officer for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species, sent over a commentary regarding Gov. Lingle’s intention to veto a bill authorizing an inspection fee on incoming cargo. Martin writes:
The Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species is greatly concerned that Gov. Lingle has stated her intention to veto HB 2843 (a bill that would allow the Hawaii Department of Agriculture to charge a service fee on ALL incoming cargo for invaisve species inspection services). Current funding for these services is inadequate, and allows for inspection of less than 1% of incoming goods in less-than-ideal inspection facilities. Please see the attached commentary for more information. I know it is too long to use as a letter, but I wanted to provide it to you folks anyway.
