Monday…Denver hangover

[text] Still some more odds and ends to share from Denver and the Democratic National Convention.

I took this photo from the light rail to show the anti-war message on the top of a building in an industrial area of the city. Lots of delegates rode the rail past this spot every day. The sign is hard to read in this mini version, but click for the larger version to read the message.

Many, perhaps all of the state bloggers who went to Denver have received an email request from the Library of Congress:

The United States Library of Congress has selected your Web site for inclusion in its historic collections of Internet materials related to Election 2008. The Library’s traditional functions, acquiring, cataloging, preserving and serving collection materials of historical importance to the Congress and to the American people to foster education and scholarship, extend to digital materials, including Web sites. We request your permission to collect your web site and add it to the Library’s research collections. We also ask that we be allowed to display the archived version(s) of your web site.

With your permission, the Library of Congress or its agent will engage in the collection of content from your Web site at regular intervals over time. The Library will make this collection available to researchers onsite at Library facilities. The Library also wishes to make the collection available to offsite researchers by hosting the collection on the Library’s public access Web site. The Library hopes that you share its vision of preserving Internet materials and permitting researchers from across the world to access them.

Immortality for iLind.net? Better yet, one reader says: “Immortality for Toby!”

If you’re looking for sources on what’s up in Alaska politics, check out Celtic Diva’s Blue Oasis, which was the designated blog from the 49th state.

Be careful what you pray for. Focus on the Family, the evangelical lobby based in Colorado, was praying for rain to disrupt Obama’s big speech at Invesco Field.

They even made a 3-minute video, supposedly in jest, inviting viewers to add their prayers.

“I’m talking ‘umbrella-ain’t-going-to-help-you rain”, one of the group’s leaders said in the video.

Perhaps they got what they asked for, but just a few days late and some 1,400 miles off course, judging from reports as Hurricane Gustav nears the Gulf coast.

Lono Lyman, who was an alternate in Denver and a member of the Platform Committee, called my attention to the mention of Native Hawaiian issues in the party platform.

The brief three-sentences appear in a section on “tribal sovereignty”.

We support the efforts for self-determination and sovereignty of Native Hawaiians, consistent
with principles enumerated in the Apology Resolution and the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act. We will increase federal resources for economic development, education, health, and other important services. We will respect Native Hawaiian culture rights and sacred places.

Although some Hawaiians believe the Akaka bill is inconsistent with sovereignty, others will appreciate the platform drafters effort to accommodate both perspectives within a larger commitment to native sovereignty.

The original draft platform contained only a single sentence referring to Native Hawaiians, but was expanded following public hearings in Honolulu in July 2008 as part of the Dems “Listening to America” process.

[text]Finally, I thought I would share this little bit of Denver. We found this place while searching for breakfast on our last morning there. It’s tucked away next to an Adventist hospital near Denver University and a couple of gas stations. And what a find! Real food, prepared fresh, good fresh fruit, lots of conversation. Just click on the photo for a few more views of the Cozy Cottage.
