Monday…Smear artist arriving in Honolulu, surprising links, and some overdue dogs

Oh, great.

Now we’ve got a national nut job by the name of Andy Martin, just profiled in the New York Times, announcing that he is coming to Hawaii to launch another round of his false claims about Barack Obama.

Here’s a guy with a proven track record of spreading falsehoods as part of what The Nation called “the new right-wing smear machine“, where writer Christopher Hayes provides this bit of background:

A quick word about Andy Martin. During a 1983 bankruptcy case he referred to a federal judge as a “crooked, slimy Jew, who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.” Martin, who in the past was known as Anthony Martin-Trigona, is one of the most notorious litigants in the history of the United States. He’s filed hundreds, possibly thousands, of lawsuits, often directed at judges who have ruled against him, or media outlets that cover him unfavorably. A 1993 opinion by the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, in Atlanta, described these lawsuits as “a cruel and effective weapon against his enemies,” and called Martin a “notoriously vexatious and vindictive litigator who has long abused the American legal system.” He once even attempted to intervene in the divorce proceedings of a judge who’d ruled against him, petitioning the state court to be appointed as the guardian of the judge’s children.

Earlier this year, the Washington Post traced the persistent smear that Obama is a Muslim to Martin’s work.

And now he’s announced plans to land in Hawaii this week to do his dirt.

I’m sorry. Sometimes free speech sucks.

Yesterday I was wandering the web and decided to check out blogs that link to mine and got several surprises, like the Laie-based blog Forever Ka’ili, now in the midst of an extended pro-Obama issue analysis. There goes my stereotype of this Mormon community located another 13 miles up the coast.

Doug White’s Poinography.com and iLind.net are both on Becker Communications’ “Favorite Blogs” list. We’re also both on the favorites list of a blog called “Falling for the first time“, apparently written by a young woman who lays bare the problems and joys of her life.

A position on its “blogs I like” list then led me to the Home Addition Diary, a pretty interesting look at the kind of home improvement project that probably isn’t going to be on my “to do” list anytime soon. But it’s a blog worth checking out!

Anyway, it was fun to read outside of my regular batch of blogs that I routinely check out.

[text]And. in the midst of all that Sunday wandering, I realized that cats have unfairly dominated the photos over the past six weeks. So it’s time to address to canine imbalance with another round of Kaaawa’s morning dogs.

This is Ms. Daisy. She and Ruby are a rambunctious pair of black and white hounds who occasionally bound out to greet us, gleefully accept dog biscuits, and then retreat upstairs into their house like very good dogs. A couple of days ago they came running out of the darkness. Ruby got her biscuit, but Daisy refused to put down the stuffed animal that she was carrying. And if your mouth is full of a teddy bear, you’re not going to be able to grab a big Costco dog biscuit.

Anyway, click on the photo for this overdue batch of dogs.

Wow, thanks for the link Ian. Now I have to pay attention to what I post. I don’t think I’d really recommend our building approach either, but it’s the only way we could afford this project. And the one bathroom house was just getting too tight.

I love your blog for the political and local insights (and because my husband is a UHS grad too — 1980). I’m sorry about your parents — dh’s father died of Altzheimer’s and it was really hard.

    Hi Ian,
No, your stereotype of Laie is absolutely correct! haha! There’s just a few of us Barack Obama supporters living here! By the way, you and I have met. I’m precinct 1’s VP, district 47’s secretary and Region 9’s secretary. We met at a meeting sometime ago; right after the caucuses and after your video was posted on the NYT website. Next time I see you at a meeting, I’ll be sure to introduce myself. In the meantime, I’m going to wonder over to Obama’s campaign office to see how they’ll address the Andy Martin issue.
As always, thanks for an informative post.
    Barack Obama for President!
    and
    Vote NO on Con-Con!

And let’s not forget the role the Big Island’s own Andrew Walden, he of “Hawaii Free Press” infamy, played in the dissemination of the Obama-Muslim smear, as mentioned in the Washington Post article.
