Okay, I’ve got to admit that Lingle’s Obama smear (that Obama would somehow destroy the economy) doesn’t hold a candle to the one in South Carolina accusing him of being the anti-Christ. Really.
Snopes.com has even had to tackle this charge, concluding (obviously?) that it is false. Snopes says:
Nothing in the Bible–in Revelation or elsewhere–describes the anti-Christ as being “a man, in his 40s, of Muslim descent.” In fact, since the book of Revelation was complete by the end of the second century, but the religion of Islam wasn’t founded until about four hundred years later, the notion that Revelation would have mentioned “a Muslim” at all is rather far-fetched. (And even if it did, it couldn’t be construed as a reference to Barack Obama, since Senator Obama isn’t a Muslim.)
I guess when you can’t win on the issues, can’t win on the record, and can’t win on your policy proposals, then your alternative is just to lie and smear. It’s a tacit admission that McCain and the GOP recognize they are in danger of losing, and losing badly.
By the way, don’t miss out on Rolling Stone’s profile of John McCain, “Make-Believe Maverick“. It’s definitely a different take on the man and his career.
A former Star-Bulletin insider complained to me about Starbulletin.com’s latest web ads that pop up and block the entire news page.
This anti-con con ad was one of those that automatically appeared a few days ago. It wasn’t just intrusive–it blocked the news content on the page and wasn’t readily removed.
You probably saw this hideous monstrosity already. As intrusive as banner ads can be on a news website, having something that covers almost all of the website’s window – and is animated, too – is just wrong.
Certainly no one in the news side would have let this one through.
And if you missed the televised Con Con debates this week, the KGMB/Advertiser version appears to be available online, although I haven’t watched it yet to see if it contains the entire debate. As far as I can tell, the KHON version is not available online. If you know where to find it, let me know and I’ll post the link.
Have you marked your calendars for next week’s free Podcamp and Wordcamp “unconference” at the Hawaii Convention Center? The events start off on Friday morning (Oct 24) and continue through Saturday. You can register (for free) online. I was encouraged to take part in the program, so you’ll find me in the list of scheduled speakers on the Wordcamp track.
Although I’ve been using the WordPress blogging platform for a while now, I’m still pretty hazy on its technical aspects. Perhaps I’ll learn something over the two days that will help. For example, why does this page render correctly in Firefox, but when viewed in Safari the Tweets on the left appear in an inappropriately large typeface. If I’m lucky, I’ll know the answer by the end of the day on Saturday.
A new study has been getting lots of press for its finding that moderate wine drinking could shrink your brain.
I say: Hey, who wants an overweight brain anyway?

thanks for the safari note… and i thought it was supposed to look that way.
obama as the anti-christ. wow. that one takes the cake.
Firefox removes pop-ups automatically, and if not, other ad-blocking software does. AdBlock Plus is the second most popular add-in for Firefox last I looked. Opera also removes popups, and has done so for years.
Increasingly advertisers will have to think of something else, and who knows, eventually advertising may not work well as a business model on the web.
The Podcamp/Wordcamp organizer(s) are a little short on aloha (or disorganized). I sent in a request to be a sponsor, i.e. offering money, but no one ever responded. The event is otherwise a terrific idea and I hope they get a good attendance, especially for your part of the program!
