More from the John Lind collection: Then and (not quite) Now

[text][text]

I recently ran into a fine old photo of my dad in a group with the late Michel Martin, of Chez Michel fame. That’s my dad, second from the left, and Martin, second from the right. On the far right is Charlie Crabb, a bouncer at the restaurant, who married a close friend of my mother’s.

According to the handwritten note, it was taken at Michel’s first restaurant in Wahiawa in 1939, while other accounts indicate Michel didn’t open his Wahiawa restaurant until 1942. In either case, its a great photo.

It also sent me scurrying for the followup of the two men together again 60 years later, in 2003, at a dinner honoring Martin, who died early this year at age 100.

    Hi Ian,
This is a shameless comment ( more like announcement) unrelated to your post about your awesome dad.
If anyone is planning on going to the inauguration (as I am) in DC, my friend is willing to rent out some space in her apartment to people coming in from Hawai’i (she’s from here). And the kicker is: she lives 10 BLOCKS FROM THE CAPITAL.

Sorry Ian, to use your blog for this shameless announcement. I’m using every resource I have right now to make sure the inauguration is a pleasant experience for everyone.

folks can contact me at: elizabethrago@gmail.com

    Thanks Ian. And sorry again.
