There was an overflow crowd at Kaaawa Elementary School last night (Jan. 15) for a special community association meeting to discuss a Department of Education plan to close the school and bus its students to either Hauula or Waiahole.
Signs made by students were displayed in the building that serves as the school’s cafeteria, while other signs were carried by students outside the room.
The diverse crowd of parents and neighbors appeared in unanimous support of the school, which many people said is a key link that knits the community together.
This collection of photos will hopefully give you a flavor of the evening. Click on the photo to view the full set of pictures.
And check back a little later for a brief substantive report on the evening’s discussion.

Ian,
What is the best venue, for those of us who can’t be in Kaaawa now, to express our concern about the closure? Any email links etc would be helpful.
Thanks, Dan Price
Saying that parents and students at Kaaawa oppose the closing of the school is sort of like saying Democrats support Obama.
Kind of goes without saying.
A better story would be how do the parents and students at Hauula and Waihole feel about having the Kaaawa students being a part of their schools knowing that some Kaaawa parents feel that both those schools are below par.
