Hiking Waialae Nui, May 1957

[text]

We were cub scouts in Pack 116 at Kahala School, and on the first Saturday in May of 1957, my dad took us hiking up Waialae Nui, above the first homes being built along the lower end of Halekoa Drive.

My sister just recently found these slides among my father’s stuff, joining a few B&W prints I have in an old album.

Together they record a place that no longer exists–those undeveloped slopes looking down over East Honolulu, from Diamond Head to Koko Head.

I love this photo of the exuberant gang, although several names now elude my memory. Hopefully someone will be able to fill in the blanks.

LOVED the photos, Ian, especially the ones looking back down the grassy slopes. It’s almost as if you were in an amphitheater with the flatlands and the ocean beyond providing the performance.

Great photos, thanks! I also attended Kahala Elementary and lived about half way up Halekoa Drive, probably 7-10 years after those photos were taken. The homes had progressed much higher upward by that time. Great views up there!
