Friday (2)…Cat ladders, Catcerto, cat ladies, and Friday’s Felines

The main course–today’s Feline Friday foto gallery–is coming soon. But first a few items I’ve been setting aside all week.

A web site devoted to cat ladders? Sounds like a stretch, doesn’t it? But here’s a site that has collected some 700 photos of cat ladders of all types and styles designed to get favored felines from here to there.

Then there’s Nora, the piano playing cat, who has now been written into a symphonic “Catcerto”.

And how about PawNation.com, with all kinds of news about animals in general. Where else would I learn about “Cat Ladies“, the documentary?

You’ll notice, in today’s Feline Friday gallery, that we have stopped the growth of our cat population. We don’t want to wake up one morning and find ourselves with 100 cats in the house. Perhaps that’s sacrilegious to say on a Feline Friday, but it’s true.

Mr. TobyIn any case, right now we’re living with eight cats. Mr. Toby failed to appear last Friday, so he’s well featured this time around.

Toby used to sleep outside during the day, but in the past several months he comes in for his early morning meal and then disappears down the hall. He can be found sound asleep later in the day, usually under our dresser in the bedroom or behind the bed.

Click on Mr. Toby for the rest of today’s photos.

The Catcerto is a hoot! I first linked to it from a Facebook friend. I just love it. Thanks for posting.

    Fantastic show.

I don’t doubt that some cats might enjoy making piano sounds themselves. In Japan, many cats like listening to shakuhachi and gather round (alas, none have taken up the instrument themselves that I’m aware of). One of our cats would jump up onto the windowsill in the evening to listen to the shakuhachi teacher play, in the house just across the narrow street from us.

Not to rain on the cat musician parade, but a little catnip dust between the keys is said to encourage a cat to relate to the instrument, and the cheek-rubbing behavior is consistent with that, after which the usual rewards would keep the cat playing (also consistent with the video and the cat looking at the photographer). I’m not disparaging this cat’s talent, mind you, just offering that there could be another explanation, one which involves merchandise and well-worked out licensing arrangements, as the owners’ website does, e.g. “For licensing & promotional opportunities, please contact Laura Becker at Moxie & Company. lbecker@moxieco.com or 203.259.2729 http://www.moxieco.com / Key categories available for licensing include: Books, Toys, Games & a range of Pet Products, among others.” The site offers products including two books available from Amazon.com, and all the usual cafepress t-shirts, mugs, etc.

So despite the novelty of this, I hope the cat at least gets some kitty treats out of the profits she is bringing to her owners.

With eight cats sharing our household, you would think that we could get at least one of them to make us some moola!
