Sunday…Long Gone bits of honolulu

[text]Interior of Kau Kau Korner. I’m guessing, from the context of other photos it was stored with, that it dates from around 1940, although it could be later.

It was found, along with a few other photos showing the interiors of Honolulu eateries of the day, among the papers saved by my father, John M. Lind.

I’ve been sorting and boxing his things, and was attracted by these high quality glimpses into a world that’s largely gone.

Please click on the photo to this one and several additional photos.

Waikiki Pharmacy was on mauka side of Kalakaua and DH of Stewart’s on the makai side. It was operated by The Liberty House (Amfac). Al Harris, State Energy Office mgr. yrs later, was an early mgr. there. Henry Walker, Amfac CEO, did a turn there early in his career. Located next to Waikiki Theater w/LH store on the other side.

The LauLau and Hawaiian plate meals are clearly way less than $2 each. I DO remember the Kau Kau Korner menu at the “extra” link. In the days, however, when summer cannery workers were making $1.25 an hour.

There seems to be a jukebox controller on the counter in the shot with the dessert tower thingy. I remember those at a place my family visited in Honolulu. We stayed in Waikiki at the Edgewater bungalows, it was a terrific experience, very close to the beach. I had a really neat childhood, I must admit.
