The weather changed this week. After a month of hot, humid days and nights, suddenly it has turned cool, with over night temperatures dropping below 70. A sharp turn around the seasonal corner. This morning the stars are bright against a clear sky. We’re waiting to see what the dawn will be like.

Back on task–One thing always leads to another.

Last night, a reader suggested that a WordPress plug-in could be causing the trouble some people are having with commenting on this site. So I fiddled with the plug-ins.

The next message I received, which I didn’t read until much later, let me know that the site was not loading and instead gave a “Fatal Error” message.

Oops. Back to undue whatever I did with the plug-ins, and at least the site is back.

The comments are still a problem. Several people report they could not read or leave comments using Windows Vista and Internet Explorer. One person says Vista and Firefox also didn’t work, while another said they were fine with that combo.

No one so far has reported any problem using a Mac with either Safari or Firefox.

And one person said the problem has come up before but solved itself after a few days.

So, to tell the truth, I have no idea what’s going on.

Here’s a useful site that has joined my bookmarks–AFSCME’s Daily Newswire, with national and state/local news stories about labor issues.

This led me to a study of the impact of furloughs by the UC-Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education, which estimates cost savings will be much less than previously calculated.

The State Capitol web site has documents from the Senate’s Ad Hoc Committee looking into the impact of layoffs and furloughs in Hawaii, including a series of committee reports and video of hearing testimony.
