Filling in more blanks

Old Waikiki photoDave Swart added more information to this photo, originally posted here in September 2009.

At that time, I wrote:

There are no notations on this photo, which appears to show a winning team from an unknown competition. With Diamond Head in the background, unblemished by today’s condominium and hotel towers, it’s a classic.

On the far right in the photo is Rabbit Kekai. The tallest of the team, second from left, is Ed Whaley. Both are well-known beachboys of that era.

Now Swart has identified two more of the men.

Amazing – I knew 2 of these guys – David Kapahulehua (3rd from left); and next to Rabbit is catamaran designer, and one-time trans-pac record holder Rudy Choy, who was my father’s best friend during the 1960s. If this photo is 1949 – Rudy would have been about 26.
