Here’s one I wish I had seen earlier this week for my dad’s birthday.
It’s an editorial from one of the Honolulu newspapers, published September 22, 1953.
Crediting him as “the driving force” behind the revival of the sports of canoe racing and surfing, it concludes: “To a ‘naturalized coast haole,’ Hawaii owes a big mahalo!”

He was a legend in his own time! It’s great that he was contemporaneously recognized for efforts that still bear fruit today, nearly 60 years later. Not many of the great ones get that credit until they’ve passed. Thank you for sharing this, Ian.
