Catching up with Mr. Duke on Feline Friday

Duke & WallyMr. Duke gave me a scare this week. One morning, very early, I woke up to the sound of a cat throwing up. It was Duke. He proceeded to throw up the remainder of his last meal, and then continued with echoes of that until he was emptied out. He did not feel good, and wasn’t much interested in eating afterwards. This isn’t that unusual for cats. A hairball can set them off, or just eating too fast, or…who knows? But in Duke’s case, not eating means that I’m pretty sure that he shouldn’t get his normal insulin dose. So we did a little adjustment. By the time the regular time for his shot rolled around, I had gotten him to eat a little bit by tempting him with some canned food, then following with a small pile of his special dry food diet. Then I cut his insulin in half, figuring half the amount of food, perhaps half the amount of insulin. And then I worried. So I ended up staying home to keep him under observation. In an abundance of caution, you might say.

I’m glad to say that he bounced right back with a pretty good appetite that night, and was back to normal by the next morning. He hasn’t had a repeat of the episode during the rest of the week, so I’m relieved.

Meanwhile, Romeo has recovered from his last fight. Actually, two fights in close order. We still don’t know who he might have been fighting with.

So it goes in our feline household.
