Denby Fawcett and Charley Memminger announce moves

Weather radarOkay, I’ll admit it. We’re declaring our regular morning walk “rained out”. Normally, we’re out there rain or shine. But today’s rain and wind promise a pretty miserable experience and we yield to “reality”. Oh, that’s the weather radar map over on the left as of about 6:05 a.m. Hawaii time (click on it for a better view). You can see the storm sweeping across Oahu and over to Maui. All that orange and red doesn’t look good, and the plain old green is, well, wet. In any case, today it’s direct to coffee for us.

Denby News.jpgSo…Here was some unexpected news. An email to KITV staff from news director Genie Garner yesterday afternoon announced reporter Denby Fawcett‘s resignation effective at the end of the year.

For those of you who don’t know, Denby has been part of the KITV4 News Team for 23 years– and she has had an amazing career that started well before she came to KITV.

Denby is one of the best journalists I have personally worked with in my career. And it goes without saying that she is one of the best known, and most respected reporters in the business.

She has a knowledge of Hawaii and Hawaii politics that will be missed here and across the state.
Denby’s covered every story imaginable. She was one of the first women to cover the Vietnam War.

Denby is also a published author and she says that’s one of the many things she will be doing after she leaves the station. In fact, she says, she’s working on a book right now.
Denby she is looking forward to “working for herself” and is by no means calling this a “retirement”.

So please join me in wishing Denby amazing success and joy as she moves on to this next chapter in her life and career.

And Charley Memminger sent out an email yesterday announcing his own move:

Aloha family, friends and “others”,

I’m happy to announce that my humor column, Charleyworld, has found a home at Hawaii’s fastest growing Internet news site: the Hawaii Reporter.

Charleyworld will be posted weekly, filling in the huge satire, sarcasm, irony, facetiousness, politically-incorrect musings and gecko commentary gap left when the two daily newspapers merged. (Speaking of irony, after Charleyworld was left homeless with the debut of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the column placed third in the 2010 National Society of Newspaper Columnists competition for newspapers OVER 100,000 circulation.)

Since Honolulu became a “one newspaper town,” the Hawaii Reporter has emerged as a “must read” source of news and commentary, offering island residents an important journalistic voice. Hawaii Reporter has recently deepened its talent pool with the addition of respected journalists Jim Dooley and Greg Wiles and TV investigative reporter Matt Levy.

In this week’s “Charleyworld”, I point out that – thanks to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia and the notorious WikiLeaks, the Hawaiian word “Wiki” is now officially the most famous Hawaiian word in the world, more famous than even “Aloha,” “Mahalo” and “Kaaawa.”

And so it goes on this Friday morning.

Denby is cool. respected. hard working. many reporters tried to get to the home on 10th ave when that boulder popped thru the wall after rolling down the hill. I kept them all at bay except Denby and she got the interview with the owner. Once, saw her in front of Varsity/east side grill interviewing some kid and I said to my drinkin buddy; let’s get on TV. She interviewd me about the east side grill’s sudden closure and after, thanked me for good sound bites and delivery which is always good to get feedback on, haha.
I heard she dodged bulletts during the Viet nam war. You GO, girl!

yea. and in the appropriation, it no longer is a Hawaiian word, Do a search. there is Wiki this and wiki that across the interweb landscape. The word has lost its local original meaning. It means nothing at all, except Hawaiian culture is up for grabs for anyone to take words and use them for their own ends. Not pono, in my mind.

Nope. Not a famous Hawaiian word, Memminger.
Just a popular word that, once upon one time, had meaning and use here.

Big Braddah… FYI … from the preeminent source of semi-factual info, Wikipedia itself:
Ward Cunningham, the developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as “the simplest online database that could possibly work.”[4] “Wiki” is a Hawaiian word for “fast”.
