News partnership knocks other television news links off Star-Advertiser site

[text]Did you happen to notice this change?

It used to be that you could scroll down the front page of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s online edition and eventually get to a listing of links to top stories from Hawaii television stations.

Not today.

Now the list of local stories is limited to top stories from “Media partner” Hawaii News Now, which in turn resulted from the controversial merger of three television stations. Gone are the headline stories from KHON and KITV, which used to be listed there as well. When did this change kick in? I don’t know.

It isn’t clear whether this partnership goes further than previously, when the two news organizations cooperated in election season polling and, perhaps, other projects. And perhaps I’m over-reacting. But when the state’s largest newspaper combines with the product of the earlier (and controversial) broadcast merger, I can’t help worrying that the result is likely to be less diversity, less competition, and probably less “news”.

You are being kind saying you “can’t help worrying that the
result is likely to be less diversity, less competition, and
probably less “news”. To put it bluntly, there have been been too
much news with Star Advertiser and Hawaii News Now. The merge
further means that rich and organized corporations with lobbyists,
publicists, and strategists will manipulate the public with window
dressing news. To make it sound like ‘news’, they will throw in
some fire report here and some crazy aunt shooting their nephew
from the police beat. We’ve been had and it’s going to get
    worse.

We are the loser, message control is now a lot easier – as things become more problematic, don’t expect to hear about it…..
