Baptism

It was another one of those Kaaawa moments.

Saturday morning, just after 7:30 a.m.

We were just a couple of blocks from home, returning from our morning walk on the beach, just before going up the hill. Hot, a little tired. And then a young woman walked out from a house to greet us.

“Could you come to our baby’s baptism and take pictures?”

I answered quickly, thinking about my calendar for the next week.

“When?”

“Ten o’clock,” she replied, smiling. “At the park,” pointing in the general direction towards Kualoa.

Then to clarify.

“By the restrooms.”

Aha. Kaaawa Beach Park.

Meda was already booked with an appointment in Kailua, so I really didn’t have any excuse except for the threatening weather.

Okay.

Forget that it’s right along Kamehameha Highway, a narrow strip of land for picnicking, shrinking for decades through erosion. It’s a place in the community to party.

I was there at the appointed hour. Tents were already in place as trucks pulled in with the cooking equipment, grills, deep fryer, tables, coolers, and on and on. I didn’t stay for all the eating.

Here are a few of the photos from this Kaaawa moment.
