Another legislative alert from Common Cause: SB 671 would punch loopholes through gift law

Nikki Love of Common Cause Hawaii provided this alert:

Just a brief note: Tomorrow (Tues March 1) at 9AM in Senate JDL, a proposed SD1 has been posted for SB671. The proposed SD1 makes major changes to the gifts/ethics laws.

It seems that the proposed SD1 creates exemptions that would allow, among other things:

–Gifts up to $200 each, under circumstances where it might be reasonably inferred that the gift is intended to influence

–No limits on gifts of food or beverages

–Gifts of travel/lodging paid by lobbying organizations

–Gifts of tickets to charity, cultural, political, or community events

Link to SB 671, Proposed SD1:

The original version of SB 671, introduced by the odd couple of Les Ihara and Sam Slom would have tightened reporting requirements, which the proposed SD1 does just the opposite.

SD1 certainly seems to be sending a not-too-subtle political message to the two of them.
