Here we are, another Feline Friday. Ms. Harry, also known as Harriet, is interested in that bag of Orijen cat food, a new addition to the diet around here. They seem to like it, and they do like variety, so I tend to slowly rotate through several different brands or flavors. I’ve read that this creates fussy cats, and that could be true, I suppose. But fussy is the least of our cat worries these days, if you want to know the truth.
On the feline diabetes front, I’m taking the plunge after finding a pretty good deal on an AlphaTRAK glucose meter, which is tested and calibrated for dogs and cats. Now that I’ve been getting better at doing home glucose tests on Duke and Silverman, I decided to goes this next step in getting results that our vet, who also uses the AlphaTrak, can quickly evaluate. It’s more expensive than the meter I’m currently using, but if it gives our vet more confidence in the results of the home testing, it’s definitely worth it!
Now if I can just get Silverman’s ears to give up a little drop of blood for testing as easily as Duke’s!

My prediction is that the readings your vet obtains with her AlphaTrak will be considerably higher than your readings at home with the same kind of glucometer because the stress of a visit to the vet can really pump up cat’s glucose levels.
Our readings from the same blood sample taken at the vet with both meters–the reading on our Freedom Lite meter had to be increased by a factor of nearly 1.4 to equal the vet’s AlphaTrak, although both read from the same blood sample. But we don’t have enough comparisons to be confident in that difference. We’ll see.
