We do have a new problem.
Early this week, we had the old original aluminum sliding doors in our living room replaced with new vinyl sliding doors by Coastal Windows. Two sets of doors give us a large opening to the outside. We’re waiting for the awning windows which will be installed on each side of the doors.
The problem is that the old cat door went out with the demolition.
Now we’ve got two nice, big, clean cat doors installed in the temporary walls on each side of the room. They look great. The problem is that only one of the eight cats has learned how to go in and out through them. Romeo is apparently the smart one. The rest approach the doors, look, sniff, and walk away feeling trapped. I even tried going out onto the deck and opening cans of cat food. Romeo was still the only one to make it out on his own.
So far, most of the other cats have let us shove them through the doors but will not repeat on their own. Toby has managed to fight any attempt to shove him through the portal. I wonder how long they’ll take to learn the routine?

Maybe Romeo doesn’t mind the formaldehyde, or whatever. Could actually be lack of smarts. Not that I have anything personal against Romeo, just trying to think like a cat to the extent I can.

I WISH I could keep at least one of our cats from finding every exit to go outside – Tikit has torn up three screens, is at the front door every time somebody visits, and can even open sliding windows if they aren’t locked. Still, she always comes home…
Try replacing the plastic with nylon screen, rubbing catnip all around the frame on the outside, and spraying Feliway (http://www.feliway.com/us) all over the inside frame. Or you can just open the people doors for them (we play door-person several times a day for our few cats that are allowed out or in)
I’ll try the Fellway. Then the catnip, although then they’ll probably fight over the doors!
They crazy thing is that most of our cats have been going in and out their old cat door their whole lives, or the entire time they’ve lived with us. But “that door” isn’t these doors, according to their brains.
