July 14. Bastille Day. We remember it because one of our earlier generation of calico cats, Kua, died on Bastille Day in 1998.
That’s Ms. Kua as a kitten, looking out the front door of our former townhouse near Kahala Mall. Hovering in the background is Miki, who mothered her and then was her lifelong companion. The two calicos were quite a team!
In any case, we always think of Ms. Kua on Bastille Day. Read a little more about Ms. Kua by clicking on her picture.
Today, though, brought a morning gift. Another small glass ball floated to shore just as we were walking past the spot. I saw it rolling in the waves as they washed up on the sand. At first I thought it was a rock, but its shape and the nature of the light caught my attention. As we got closer, I saw that it was a small ball.
I believe it’s the third that we’ve picked up this year.
I like to think that it came with a message from Ms. Kua. Thank you, Kua.

Adorable. Mahalo, Ms. Kua! Did she ever like to play ball?
