Here’s a quick Las Vegas travel question.
Meda’s been invited to lecture at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the spring. She’ll be there for a few days, I’ll likely tag along.
So we’re looking for a reasonably priced hotel, nonsmoking, preferably with in-room safe (to lock up the computer) & refrigerator. Reasonable places to eat nearby. No casino necessary. Location open, but not totally isolated. Downtown or near the strip would work. We may have one day to play tourist.
There’s a mind boggling number of hotels in Vegas.
Any suggestions?

If downtown is your pleasure the Golden Nugget is my choice. Great rates, easy parking & good food.
Anywhere on the strip for me is wonderful just shop rates. I like the Luxor as it is near the far end of strip and the cross street to UNLV is nice.
I have a friend who owns three condos in Vegas that he rents out for transient use. Send me an e-mail if interested and I will pass it along to him.
Agree that Golden Nugget is the choice for downtown. On the strip we have enjoyed the massive MGM and used the monorail from time to time to get to places along that route.
Don’t even think about a car, although virtually all hotels/casinos have self-parking at no charge if you wanna do that.
Mainstreet Station rooms have been redone relatively recently. You can book directly with them and do not need one of those packages. The key for me is the easy access in and out from the hotel to the parking lot if you are going to be driving around. Also, they seem to give special handling if you are from Hawaii. And, you will most likely run into people you know which makes it fun.
Ask the UNLV folks who are organizing the lectures. I’ll be they have ties to some hotels, maybe even a deal.
Ask how big the safe is. Many in-room safes are very small. If it were me I would take the laptop or Ipad with me all the time.
I only stay downtown, almost never at the overpriced strip area. If you want to go there you can always catch a free bus. The monorail is nice but also overpriced. Yes you can probably get rooms if during the weekday at the California or Mainstreet for $38-50. I think I have stayed at Fitzgeralds for only $27. Golden Nugget is the nicest hotel you will find in the downtown area. Is the Plaza open, last two times I was in Vegas it was closed for renovation.
The University of Hawai`i has a working relationship with the California Hotel in Las Vegas.
The world travelers I know do NOT use wall safes . They tell me they are not safe. And ditto on the size anyway. The ones I’ve seen are too small for a laptop.
The Tropicana has undergone some major renovations and still priced lower than the surrounding hotels – might be worth looking into…
