12 years of iLind.net

A friend Googled “ilind.net” today and alerted me to the importance of the date.

The domain, iLind.net, was created on January 27, 2000, according to public domain records.

So today is its 12th birthday, anniversary, whatever.

I started in mid-September 1999, when the old Star-Bulletin was targeted for closure. For the first several months, I was blogging–well, it was really before blogging–I was writing online using a bit of web space provided with our home Roadrunner account.

Once it because clear there was going to be a protracted battle over the future of the newspaper, I set up a new site with its own name.

iLind. It seemed simple enough. There was the iMac. Soon to be an iPod, and iPhone. But the name has never really worked. People see and hear “island,” causing endless confusion. I really should choose a less confusing name, but I somehow never get around to it.

Happy Birthday!

Congratulations, Ian. While I don’t always agree with you, I appreciate your insights and views on this crazy place, and of course, I love Feline Friday. Keep going!

Bravo Ian! Keep that journalistic light shining into the unsavory corners of Hawaii politics. Your mix of hard-nose reporting and humanity (cats, dogs, sunrises) is wonderful.

I think iLind is a fine name. After all, out here we all live on one ilind or another, and the site’s proprietor is, namely, I. Lind. It’s a tasty pun.

    Happy Birthday!
And as you know all too well, confusion is unavoidable and sometimes seems to be a daily ritual. Such is life and birthdays – it’s all about getting older and even more confused. Enjoy the weekend!

Congrats on your anniversary! I don’t remember when or how I stumbled onto your site but I’m glad I did. I’ve enjoyed most of your postings, some of which have been informative eye-openers. I really enjoyed your older photos and stories of Kahoolawe, etc. and your mom/dad’s earlier photos of old Hawaii brought back fond memories. You take great photos of the “boonies” he, he, and the animal pics and stories are just a plus. And of course your poignant entries on your dad’s last years I read with empathy.
Since I stopped my subscription to the Star/Advertiser I feel less angst not being able to read politically charged articles which always leaned one way (or having comments deleted) and find I only miss reading Dave Shapiro’s column, which I found insightful and humorous (Sat.).
I hope you’re able to keep on satisfying your readers for many more years to come. Mahalo!

Congrats, Ian. I don’t remember how I found your site, but do remember that it was before 2006, because Nov 2006 was when my own blog started and you publicized it on yours. Mahalo nui loa!

Congratulations! An awesome milestone. And thank you for the consistently relevant and insightful information we find here and nowhere else.

You’ve established iLind.net as the website to go to first thing in the morning for so many people. No need to change a good thing.

Comgratulations on 12 years! I’ve been following you since the beginning and you quite often remind the “standard” media they are slipping or missing something. Keep it up!

I must be thick- I never got the iLind joke. Congrats Ian. I just passed four years and it seems like forever but 12? Wow.

And to all those starting a blog remember- you’ll be stuck with that name forever so choose wisely… not on a quixotic whim like someone I know….

Kudos, Ian. You provide the public with a wonderful service and you do it well. Many nefarious activities would not see the light of day without your diligence.

I did not have my own computer 12 years ago. Since retirement,, I have read a dozen or more Hawaii blogs and find yours sets the highest standard, is on the mark for timeliness and relative on the so-called thread. Some meander like drunken sailors looking for the wharf, others allow bigotry to run rampant. You have a knack for pushing it back to the original subject.

Doug is right, I do not always agree. I’d be shocked if I did. You ferret out a lot of unwritten stories. Keep at it.

12 years? Time has passed quickly and you’ve kept track of the changes throughout.

We all wish everything had turned out better for everyone. But sometimes adversity leads toward enlightenment.

Thanks for being so diligent and vigilant!
