What have unions ever done for us?

You hear this kind of question from time to time, often buried in comments here and on other blogs.

Here’s a good response, in the style of that “What have the Romans ever done for us?” scene in Monty Python’s “Life of Brian“.

Thanks to the Newspaper Guild (newsguild.org) for flagging the video.

The suspenders dude remind of “oxymoron (contin)” rush limp bawl… maybe a more honest one, at that.

P.S. The thunder ‘n lightning has happened at too many meetings I’ve been held hostage in….

Well clearly The Newspaper Guild failed to do anything as Gannett was screwing the workforce at The Advertiser. Maybe they were on the same side as the “boss” in the video.

Pros and cons equally if you delve into it. but is seems generally speaking, Unions had their place to get workers more rights back in the day, but are obsolete monsters that devour the companies and put themselves out of business. Look at the auto industry now.

For Hawaii’s construction unions, in conspiring by running misleading television & radio commercials on Honolulu Rail during the 2008 & 2010 elections, and now before starting construction in Waipahu — ransacking the $500 million cash rail fund in the 2012 election year. With the real possibility of Honolulu Rail being cancelled, *too funny* and totally “bachi” (bad karma) is the ongoing frantic “gut and replace” bill to “streamline” environmental regulation. Should Honolulu Rail be cancelled, I hope the membership will hold their leaders accountable for their “hog cheese” mentality.
