Mr. Temple moves to Washington

Civil Beat editor and general manager, John Temple, is trading his jeans and slippers for a suit and tie after being named one of two managing editors at the Washington Post.

News of the appointment was posted on Civil Beat early this morning, and is still reverberating through the journalism community.

Here’s what’s being said on the Post’s side of the country.

“As a reporter and editor with decades of experience running local newsrooms and as a leader who has successfully launched a number of pioneering digital news projects, John’s background is ideally suited to the role he’s taking on at The Post. As a managing editor for The Post, John will ensure that the coverage we provide to our print and digital audiences is smart, original and acutely attentive to our audience. He’ll help us to build on the rapid growth we’ve enjoyed recently with readers who come to us through our website, on mobile devices, or through new platforms like the incredibly successful Washington Post Social Reader on Facebook,” said Marcus Brauchli, Executive Editor of The Washington Post.

As a Washington Post managing editor, Temple will run Local, Sports, Weekend, the Going Out Guide, Local Living, Food, Travel, Sunday Arts, Sunday Style, The Washington Post Magazine and Capitol Business. He joins managing editor Liz Spayd, who will continue to oversee the day-to-day plans for the newspaper and manage the National, Foreign, Business, Style, Investigative, Outlook, Health & Science sections and Universal News Desk.

It’s great news for John, and likely for Civil Beat, which should gain more recognition as Temple moves back into the big time.

Congratulations to John!

    Congratulations Mr Temple!
And now for the big follow-up: How many people around town are already seeking interviews to fill the position?

I used to go to the Washington Post as a little kid. The linotype machines scared the hell out of me, but they would always give me a mat from the Pogo or Dick Tracy cartoon strip at the end of the tour. Dam, I’m getting old.

One can’t get past the irony of a guy that constantly talked about print being dead and then takes a job at one of the larger print newspapers……money talks I suppose. Good for him.

As he said this morning on KIPO’s “The Conversation,” it was an offer he didn’t go looking for but that he couldn’t pass up. Still, his portfolio will decidedly be the “fluffier” of the two held by a managing editor at the Post, you know, sports, dining, weekend, stuff li’ dat.

Hawaii may be a small pond but he was working on unique political issues that won’t be in his purview in DC. Given the current political environment there, maybe that’s a good thing for him.

Congratulations to him and please let’s hope his experience here will inform whatever coverage the Post gives of any Hawaii issues in his purview.

Well, either way it happened it’s still 1000 times better of a post than what he held in Honolulu. However, I doubt very seriously there’s much truth to “I wasn’t looking for it”. There are dozens of qualified (and many arguably more) candidates out there. I think the little experiment in Honolulu doesn’t make too many radar screens across the country. Let’s be honest, it just didn’t materialize to anything close to what they expected/wanted. That’s not a slam on John, it was the biz model he was given. The boat just didn’t float. DC is right up his alley. He should do well there.

Gee Ian, for a guy who likes to skewer others for spinning the news, this one was really a stretch.

Per the Washington Post, Mr Temple:
    >> “has successfully launched a number of pioneering digital news projects, John’s background is ideally suited to the role he’s taking on at The Post. As a managing editor for The Post, John will ensure that the coverage we provide to our print and digital audiences is smart, original and acutely attentive to our audience.”

Ian is making a stretch? He’s quoting the Washington Post when it hired Temple. This is not a stretch.
