This is a special papaya.

A “volunteer” papaya sprouted up alongside our deck a couple of years ago. It produced odd little fruit that never matured, so I cut it down. Eventually, it grew back. More weird little green papayas. I finally considered it a weed. Cut it down again.
Most recently it returned, Frankenstein-style, growing out of the ferns at kind of a 45-degree angle, but this time with somewhat normal looking fruit. And this week one started to ripen. I picked it, brought it inside. That was probably on Saturday. Today it looked good enough to eat, and I cut into it.
Amazing! It was excellent! A first from this tree, now on it’s third incarnation.
The photo was taken at breakfast this morning as I blogged.
