News Junkie Alert: Win a 1-year subscription to PressReaders’ 2200+ publications

Paywalls that have gone up around many newspapers are making it difficult for avid news raiders to get their fill without breaking the bank.

PressReader.com offers one solution for maneuvering around many of those paywalls. And some lucky reader here at iLind.net will win a free one-year subscription. Read on to find out more.

I think of PressReader.com as sort of the “Netflix” or “Hulu” of print.

Here’s their own description.

PressReader is revolutionizing how digital content is delivered with an all-you-can-read library that gives you access to thousands of newspapers and magazines from around the world with one simple login. Whether you have a mobile device or a computer, PressReader offers the convenience of providing you with the news you want online or offline anytime, anywhere. With access to a vast selection of top news in full-content customized to your country and language of choice, you’ll get in depth stories and the best journalism from the world’s most popular publications. Translate your article in up to 14 languages, listen to your news with on-demand audio, read stories seamlessly with our horizontal SmartFlow technology, share your favorite articles, or find all the articles about your topic using our cross title search functions. A whole new reading experience with tons of full-content to enjoy.

PressReader can be accessed online at PressReader.com or downloaded as an app to tablets, smartphones or eReaders running on iOS, Android, Windows 8 and Blackberry 10 operating systems.

For a fixed fee of $29.99 per month, subscribers can roam through over some 2,296 publications from countries around the world. Access is via a print replica edition of the publication provided by PressReader rather than through the regular website. I’ve tried out the iPad version of the PressReader software, and have accessed PressReader via a browser on my laptop. An iPhone version is also available, as are versions for Android, Windows, Kindle, and Blackberry as well as Mac and iOS.

At the PressReader website, you can check the very long list of publications, search for those in English or in other languages, and even search for specific terms appearing in news stories across those 2,200+ publications.

Translations into about a dozen languages are also available, although I haven’t tried those out yet.

I admit to only scratching the surface of PressReader.

If that print replica edition looks familiar, it’s the same technology that produces the Star-Advertiser’s print replica, and, yes, the S-A is available via PressReader.

Coverage is not 100%, and you’ll need to check whether your favorites are available via PressReader. For example, I like to check in on Northwest news. The Seattle Times is available, but the Oregonian, down in Portland, is not. But overall, PressReader offers a lot.

So how can you win a free subscription?

The basics:

1-Leave a comment on this post between now and midnight Thursday identifying one or more publications you want to follow via PressReader.

2-You may leave up to three comments.

3-The winner will be selected at random from all comments received.

More details…One more time.

Just leave a comment on this post between now and midnight on Thursday night, February 27. Your comment should list one or more publications that you’re looking forward to having at your fingertips via PressReader. No need to be elaborate–Just provide a flavor of your interests.

There’s no need to buy anything, and you can enter up to three times.

I’ll choose the winner randomly from all comments received.

Obviously, you will have to provide your name and a working email, either along with your comment or if your comment is selected as the winner.

If you use a pseudonym, I’ll ask you to email me directly with your personal information. We’ll work out this details, if necessary, when the time comes.

Thanks for reading, and good luck.

[Disclosure: This giveaway is made possible by a special offer from PressReader. I received a three-month free subscription for review purposes, along with the option of making this free subscription offer. Nothing else of value was received.]

    My first list:
    The Washington Post
    Wall St. Journal Asia
    Globe & Mail (various locales)

And if only to reside in my browser/reader history,
    Hamburger Morgenpost

when I read your site crashed, I checked here expecting to see thousands of comments entered to win the free subscription… but only 8 entries? gee, news junkie is a rare breed. I guess, like myself, already suffering from info overload, prefer to let investigative reporters/bloggers like Ian sift through and digest the news feed, just lay out a few for me. But heck, I could use free subscriptions to
Star-Advertiser (I’m mad at them and don’t want to pay them); Civil Beat; Las Vegas Review Journal; Las Vegas Sun; Washington Post. Mahalo.

The spam comments are effectively filtered out and don’t show up on the site, but the filtering comes after they are processed through the server.

What the captcha process does is reject the automated spam before it gets to the server.

At least that’s the way it was explained to me by Hostrocket.

I promise to read every issue ‘kiver to kiver’.

(I gather that actually to see a list of all 2296 publications, I would have to give those people my e-mail address.)

Just realized it’s all print editions. So we wouldn’t be able to see the additional content of web editions? Also, no web-only sites like Civil Beat and First Look?

Still, it would be nice to have.

    NY Times
    Star-Advertiser
