I have taken down the burglary photos.
The burglar’s family has intervened, after learning about the burglary.
We have recovered most of what was taken.
We are now trying to negotiate a good outcome with the family, and with the burglar.
They recognize that he may have to pay a price, but have been trying to keep him out of trouble, recognizing his drug issues, etc.
We still have to figure out how to proceed. Prosecution is not our highest priority, as was the case the last time we were ripped off.
But what is justice in this kind of case? Right now, that’s not clear.

I don’t know him but we did install a camera to check in on my Mom between caregiver visits on M,W,F. I also have a friend that installed one to check in on her dog. The business of burglary ain’t as easy as it used to be. That’s for sure. I am sorry this happened to you ( again ) and hope the guy is caught soon !
Looks like Ian is spot-on: it looks like he is a painter or drywall/taper; based on the stains on his pants and the makeshift gloves.
looks like he is a contractor, a painter perhaps (paint on jeans and wrist sweat bands)? probably worked around the area of this house and knew when no one is home. hope you catch this bastard!
From his clothes he appears to be a painter or drywall guy. If you haven’t already go door to door with the pictures to check with the neighbors to see if any are having work down. He may have been casing your house from a job site.
Have you tried contacting the local news?

Unfortunately, here in Hawaii it makes no difference if he is caught. Even if he was arrested and convicted of burglarizing your home, there is a 70% chance that he would be given probation rather than sent to prison. That 70% probation rate applies even if he has multiple prior convictions. So you are wasting your time even trying to ID him….
Do you bother to lock your doors when you’re gone?
Yes, we do. At one time, not so much. After a couple of thefts, always. But our Hawaii houses aren’t built to be secure. They are built to let in the breezes, and to stay cool. If someone wants in, they’ll find a way in.
Sorry, Ian – I was replying to William Leary up there… don’t know why it showed up as a question to you! I lock my doors, windows, etc. too – but I know that locks just keep honest people honest.
I am glad KHON & Hawaii News Now published your photos. You should start selling these camera to the banks around town; the quality really puts theirs to shame!
Last time this happened, Ian and Media did find the person and achieved reconciliation.
It just takes a few minutes to share the photos to your contacts, and it can help.
Sounds like you’ve had experience. I’ve heard the same story too. the burglar, after being caught is RELEASED and back to doing the same thing. If you testify against him, and the guy is vindictive, sad stories, no justice.
It is NEVER a waste trying to ID someone who has violated you and your space. I say KUDOS to Ian for getting these pictures out!
Wow. Will pass this around. Can you share with us what kind of camera/software/equipment you used and how you placed it? Looks like he did not realize he was on camera. If you would share that would be awesome. Sorry for your loss and I will, again, pass this around. Hope it helps.

Well as far as I know, in Ka’a’awa, there are a couple houses that are being built not too far from 7-11. I believe they are in the stage of drywall, paint/plaster work. You might want to check there and see if the guy works there. If he does turn up to be there let me know. You can find me three houses from the post office on Hi’iaka Rd. Just ask for Kamaka.

Awesome news about the recovery, etc. Hope he learns a lesson & gets his just reward for stealing your stuff.
Pkease let us know what brand of cam system you have….I am shopping for one and the quality is excellent! Glad you got your stuff back! That being said….this guy belongs locked up as he had no respect for you or your property. Besides, if he has a drug problem he cant get them in jail. Whatever his family is doing to “rehabilitate” him isnt working. Who will be the next victim?
