Harriet and I made a trip to VCA in Kaneohe yesterday. She’s started chewing on her rear end–the fur backs of her legs, the back of her tail, and on her tummmy has been mostly licked off. Time to have one of VCA’s excellent vets take a look.
The result–no obvious physical cause was found. No fleas, no scabs, no accompanying symptoms that would pin down a cause. I approved a blood test, just to scan for hidden issues.
In the meantime, Ms. Harry is will be treated for “anxiety” with an antidepressant, Clomipram (brand name, “Clamicalm”). It’s possible that the change to keeping all the cats in the house due to Romeo’s proclivity to fight Black Cat could be the culprit. Harriet is down the status ladder, so being inside with the other cats could have left her upset enough to chew on herself.
We’ll see. The plan is to try this drug for several weeks and see if she responds. If so, we keep at it. If not, we wean her off of it, slowing dropping the dose until it goes to zero.

Oh, I missed the part about all the cats being kept inside because of Romeo’s fights with the next door cats. Yes, I think that would be hard on the others, who like to sit on the deck during the day.

One of our cats was licking bald patches on her tummy. Vet said to change the flea medication, that she was probably allergic. I had been using Advantage — bought online, cheapest price, some place in Australia. Maybe it wasn’t good, cats would run when I snapped open the tube. Can’t recall the brand I bought from the vet, more expensive, probably Frontline. Just bought more Frontline from Costco.
