Throwback Thursday: Looking for Santa, 1951

Yes, that’s me with my sister, Bonnie, and our father.

There’s a handwritten caption on the back of this photo: “Visit with Santa – 1951”.

Where would you have gone in Honolulu to see Santa in 1951?

There probably weren’t many choices.

Note the department store window in the background.

Most likely it was Liberty House in downtown Honolulu, which was just steps from the Dohrmann Hotel Supply Company store where my dad was the manager. Alternately, perhaps the old Sears store on Beretania, which would have been a bit closer to our house.

I’d bet on Liberty House downtown, which was a target for us when we lived in Wahiawa – coming to town for the (lighted?) decorations that hung over downtown streets and the (not very) animated displays in the LH windows. On the other hand I DO remember Santa at Sears – which also used to set up a Christmas display and stage a Christmas show of some kind on a concrete overhang over looking the parking lot.
