After the success in identifying the burglar who ripped us off several months ago, I thought it might be worth trying to track down a few of my friends caught in this photo.
I’m guessing the picture was taken in August 1957, but could possible have been a year earlier. It was my birthday, judging by an accompanying photo of the same group eating birthday cupcakes and ice cream in our living room. This photo was taken at the Waialae Beach Park, near the golf course. They hadn’t yet broken ground on the Kahala hotel.

From left to right: David Zimmerman, Ian Lind, Terry Malang, Fred Yuen, Chad Dunstan, and Jimmy Steiger.
At least one won’t be located. Chad died in 1986 of a sudden brain embolism, if I recall correctly. I can’t help thinking it was related to the afternoon we were riding our bikes along Hunakai Street and he turned into the path of a passing car. He suffered a concussion, but appeared to Fully recover. Then, decades later, bam.
Chad was buried in Kaneohe. I think his was the first funeral of a friend that I attended.
Anyway, I digress.
David Zimmerman. Google tells me there are many people by the name of David Zimmerman. Back in the late 50s, his family lived on Kolohala Street in Kahala, between Farmers Road and Kilauea Ave. He was tall and growing. I’m guessing he must be well over six feet. I lost touch totally with him.
Terry Malang. A recent mention brought an email comment from his sister, which sent me to an online search. It looks like Terry is in Fresno, but I didn’t find much more.
Fred Yuen. For a while, his family lived in a big house on the tip of Black Point. On an upper floor was a room set up like a ship’s bridge, with a big steering wheel, a telescope, and a commanding view of the ocean. His dad had some high level job with Frito Lay and Yick Lung, and they always had lots of great snacks in the kitchen. I recall hearing years ago that he was living on Maui, but I’ve had no contact for years.
Jimmy Steiger’s dad was in the Air Force, and they lived across the street from us in Kahala for a few years when he was stationed at Hickam. He had an older sister, Sally, who had been blind from birth. Years later, I was in email touch with her for a while. Then her address no longer worked. I believe she said Jim was living in California.
Please forward this on and invite others into the search.
And thanks for the help!

The little kid to the far right with the flat top is adorable!
There’s a Terrance Malang at 1818 E. Decatur St., Fresno, Ca 93720, according to the Fresno County registered voters’ database. (But the last time he voted was 2010, so maybe he moved.) Another database gives an address of PO Box 26023, Fresno, 93729 with phone number (559) 297-1115.
My dad is Terry Malang. I actually have a copy of this photo as well. Please email me if you’d like his information 🙂
Fred Yuen is my uncle and lives in California.
Any chance you could send me an email address, or where in California he’s living?
