Events at the UH Manoa campus are moving almost too fast to report. Now former chancellor Tom Apple made his ouster officially public last night. Now speculation moves to who will be appointed temporary chancellor to take over at this painful moment.
My Hawaii Monitor column at Civil Beat yesterday looked at the impact that the sudden hiring freeze is having on the Manoa campus.
It seems appropriate for this Throwback Thursday to harken back to the May 1968 sit-in at Bachman Hall, which started in the president’s office.
The scene below shows students gathered on the second floor of the building, many hours into the occupation of the building.

Bachman events were also discussed in Volume 1, Number 2 of “The Roach,” an underground magazine edited by Jon Olsen, which was published for about a year in 1968-69. This issue includes an “honor roll” of those arrested when police broke up the demonstration.

Excellent CB article. Thank you for the link.
Teasing out one detail — undergrad academic advisor ratio is 1:3,000 students? A generation ago, when I got my undergrad degree at UH, I saw an advisor once, my senior year, for a pre-grad review.
Contrast that with the experience of one of my kids, at a different college a few years ago. With the input from/approval (waivers) of an undergrad advisor, kiddo was able to design a course of study that was more rigorous and rewarding than the usual “choose 2 from column 1” format.
I hope that as the situation unfolds at UH, those with the ability to do so focus on (1) bulking up on course sections and getting the word out to all involved promptly to reduce stress and heartache; (2) recognizing that even at resident rates, paying UH tuition is a stretch for many, and having an advisor accessible for guidance as well as brainstorming on-point paths of study is in the students’ and the community’s best interest.
