Like a lot of other people this morning, I’ve spent the last 90 minutes watching the introduction of Apple’s newest products, including its lineup of new iPhones, as well as the new Apple Watch.
I thought I could blog simultaneously, but that’s not working. Too much interesting stuff in Apple’s show.

Apple is clearly the best because their marketers have told me so.
While this stuff is no doubt newsworthy and very exciting to many consumers, some of the media treatment has been pretty appalling in its near-complete obliteration of any pretense of distinction between news coverage and uncritical cheering/advertising.
ABC’s breathless chirping about its “exclusive access” to the “historic groundbreaking announcement” was especially over the top.
We will no doubt soon be treated to local coverage of eager geeks camping outside stores to be the first on their block, etc. etc. etc.
And in completely unrelated media-bashing:
The coverage of that big fight in the Punchbowl area last night would seem to warrant some scrutiny.
Hawaii News Now reported that the fight was between two groups of neighbors, and that police “are still investigating what led up to the fight.”
HNN also reported that the fight was between “Micronesians and Samoans who live in the area.”
But was it really necessary to report the ethnic backgrounds of the groups involved?
Ethnic strife certainly could be involved here. But the televised story made no such assertion.
On the other hand, the account HNN posted online actually includes the headline “Ethnic tension leads to huge street fight in Honolulu, 4 injured.” But the actual posted story does not describe or substantiate or otherwise even refer to any such ethnic tension. Only “police are still investigating what led up to the fight.”
Isn’t it possible that two extended families or groups of neighbors had a nasty fight about something other than ethnicity, and that ethnicity was incidental to that other issue, or even irrelevant?
Would HNN have reported a fight between, say, Japanese and Caucasian neighbors the same way?
Is HNN making assumptions or recklessly injecting ethnicity into this story? Was this reporting racist? Without any explanation of the basis for including the ethnic descriptions, it’s worth considering.
It should be noted that neither KHON, KITV, or the Star-Advertiser reported the story in ethnic terms. Then again, all the reporting has been very sparse.
The follow-up should be interesting.
Ah yes. The iPhone 6+. Gotta have it.
What to do with my still perfectly functioning 5? Instead of trading it in, I’m going to use it as an iPod Touch. Will still be useful to airplay pictures and videos to my Apple TV.
The Apple Watch? Gotta actually have some hands-on with that puppy at the Apple Store. That can wait until after the hoppla dies down
