Kaiser cancels school assembly due to bullying, threats

Kaiser High School administrators notified parents yesterday that an assembly planned for today was being cancelled due to cyberbullying and threats made via a new social app.

A new social media application, Yik Yak, has resulted in what we consider cyberbullying use.
Yik Yak allows users to anonymously post and connect with other users within a 1.5-mile radius. The anonymous posts range from name-calling to threats. After school started this morning, we learned of a post that threatened the safety of our scheduled assembly for tomorrow – as a precaution, we have decided to cancel the assembly.

We immediately alerted the Honolulu Police Department, which is conducting an investigation.

The letter to parents, signed by the school’s principal, Justin Mew, goes on to describe school policies regarding use of smartphones and other digital devices. Use of such devices during “instructional time” is prohibited and could result in confiscation.

You can read the letter here.
