Please help troubleshoot a problem

If you are a relatively regular visitor to this site, your feedback will help me troubleshoot an issue.

Just a few questions.

1. Have you experienced any intermittent problems recently accessing this site? For example, nothing happens and the page never appears, or perhaps you get a “Server not responding” error message.

2. If you answered “yes,” has it happened more than once? Would you say it has happened often? A few times? Rarely?

3. Again, if you answered “yes” to Question 1, who is your internet provider? And what kind of computer do you use?

Thanks for your help.

Here’s the background. I’ve been having trouble accessing my own site to upload new posts and do other maintenance. I’ve been going round and round with the hosting service’s tech support staff. Your answers can hopefully help identify just what is going on.

I would say the site has trouble loading about once every couple weeks for me. My provider is Time Warner and I use both a Mac and a PC.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s been very aggravating. I think the culprit is a security layer that my hosting service, HostRocket, has added. When I use “Traceroute” to track my connection, it seems to hang at that stage. Tech support thinks it could possibly be a RoadRunner problem.

Yes. I use a MacBook Pro, OX X 10.10.1 and the Chrome browser. The situation was actually worse about a week or so ago. Haven’t seen it recently.

When it happens to me I just stop loading the page and, if that doesn’t instantly show me the “content” part of the page, I try a refresh.

My hypothesis is that one of the advertisements is running on a slow server. Since there is some randomness in which advertisements are shown each time I visit, doing a refresh gives me a different ad—without the problem.

Back in the days of dial up internet (i.e. when browsing was so much slower) it used to be possible to have pages display as they were loading and you could tell exactly where the sticking points were. Now it’s all so fast. I don’t think browsers even allow that any longer, or if they do the connection speeds make it too fast to notice.

I haven’t noticed any loading problems of your site from my end.

One way to test it is to take your laptop to a nearby WiFi spot (McDonalds, Starbucks, the library) and try from there.

I’m a daily reader. I’ve had only one instance in the past two weeks or so accessing your site. I use a Mac, iPad or iPhone 6. My ISP is RR.

Maybe once a month or so but it might last for 2-4 hours.

Usually access ilind.net on HawaiianTel, Mac, Chrome, less often on ipad or iphone.

    From the mainland (Austin, TX):

The site won’t load or loads extremely slowly at least once or twice weekly for the past three to four months.

ISP is ATT U-Verse. Using a Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.

Also notably encountered the same issue on the rural Central Oregon Coast using Wave Broadband on a Macbook Air in mid-October and early December.

Mac & Hawaiian Telecom DSL – no real issues to speak of lately. Only a couple or so weeks ago was there a problem, and for the life of me I can’t remember exactly what it was. I think I emailed you about it & didn’t hear back.
