It was a while before dawn this morning and we were putting on our shoes for the daily walk down to the beach.
Then this bird song filled the air. There was one response from a nearby tree, and another that was farther away.
I’m guessing that it was a Shama Thrush, but I’m not sure of that. I never saw the bird.
Click on the YouTube file below and give a listen.
Hopefully someone who has more knowledge of birds can correct or confirm my guess.
By the way, I added Romeo’s video later in order to upload the audio file to YouTube.
Note: The illegible signature in yesterday’s post is the official signature of Congressman Mark Takai. You can confirm this by checking the signatures of legislators for the 2013-14 Legislature posted by the Legislative Reference Bureau. Plenty of funny scrawls to be found there.

Probably. They have so many songs, it is hard to identify. We have one that returns to our yard every fall and it is generally more “melodious” than the one you recorded. Beautiful bird.
gonna vote no on this one…Shama songs are usually more complex, but I defer to the ornithologists.
I’d vote no on Shama and a strong possible of a red-billed leothrix. Shama song is usualy much more melodious and complex.
I agree with the others. Not a shama.
My neighbor told me there was one around our houses. I listened to MANY youtube videos of sharmas… they have different songs, and there are many different kinds of sharmas. In general they seem to have a longish tail that they flick and either a red or white breast… from what I saw on youtube. Here’s a Kauai one. https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=shama+bird+songs&vid=8c75ca21e4fc0603a61d4720443f09e0&l=1%3A24&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts4.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DVN.608033839046395631%26pid%3D15.1&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dyqa9t1TFdbs&tit=song+bird—shama+thrush—kauai%2C+hawaii&c=3&sigr=11b550cva&sigt=1182fbumn&sigi=11rgnj5b1&back=https%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fyhs%2Fsearch%3Fp%3Dshama%2Bbird%2Bsongs%26ei%3DUTF-8%26hsimp%3Dyhs-001%26hspart%3Dmozilla&sigb=12sq4hqkv&ct=p&age=1271347200&fr2=p%3As%2Cv%3Av&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=mozilla&tt=b
It doesn’t sound like Kalani English or Frank Fasi or whoever I said, so I’ll vote for it being a Shama. Trouble is, whenever I hear one and try to talk back to it, it turns out to be a bulbul. Real Shamas ignore me.
I agree with Steve Lane. It sounds like a red-billed leothrix.
sounds like a red whiskered bulbul which has grayish brown back & wings with white breast, dark crest with slight red feathers on side of head…
