Feline Friday: A question of gender

Ms. Annie Feline Friday rides again!

So, what is it about cats and suitcases? A suitcase came out at our house this week, and Ms. Annie was on it almost immediately.

I can’t tell if it’s just considered a kind of box (and we know about cats and boxes), or if the cats are able to associate the appearance of a suitcase and the subsequent temporary absence of one or both of their regular people.

In Annie’s case, I could argue the point either way.

And here’s another question for Feline Friday raised by PetsPlace: Do male or female cats make better pets?

Do you have a preference? Many people do. A lot of owners swear that one or the other makes a much better pet. Clients have told me that they think male cats are better companions or that female cats are gentler. Some of the reasons for choosing one over another are really interesting and I want to know what you think.

I recall the wisdom imparted by Doc Hall, the first vet we took our cats to after moving to Kaaawa. He had a small practice just down the hall from Times Supermarket in Temple Valley.

His assessment was simple and went something like this. The females are complicated. Males are simple. Get them fixed, and they’re happy to eat, sleep, and occasionally play.

Generally, I think I would agree. But then we’ve had our major exceptions. Leo and Romeo immediately come to mind.

So while our males and females have been different, I would have a difficult time trying to summarize those differences.

What do you think?

Leave a comment with your thoughts, and then you might want to complete the PetsPlace survey and check out its results.

Anyone who has been around more than a few cats for a while knows each has a distinct personality. Yes, there are similarities, but they, like people, are each different. Some are more affectionate, especially as they age. Some are more aloof and stay that way. The ones we’ve had are part of my heart forever.

I have both male and female cats and really do not have a preference. Having said this, I think male cats are more mellow than females.

I too have had more than my share of cats and I too think they are each so unique and cherished, it would be hard to choose. I do sort of agree with Winnie that the males are generally more mellow than females…sort of…lol…well there again, in the end, it’s the cat’s personality. Aren’t they great?

We have many memories of beloved cats, male and female, who no longer are with us. Earthboy is our current animal companion, and he?s a study. He manages to pack in quite a bit of eating and sleeping, but he also is very active. Everyday, he spends some time attacking his tennis balls. When he wants out, instead of going to the door and meowing, he runs through the house and finally makes his way to the door and waits. He spends quite a bit of time outside at night and manages to catch some bush meat (rats) to suppliment his diet. Often, I let him into the house in the middle of the night, and he comes in soaking wet, so then I have to give him a good toweling down. He likes to cuddle with people watching TV, and some nights he sleeps with us on the bed, sleeping between our heads. He?s a treasure, and we are grateful that we have him in our lives.

If I had to chose I would chose a female. Like most of the cat family the females are the hunters. Ours have pretty much kept the place rat and mouse free although they also chomp the occasional bird. The males, not so much.

I never get a suitcase out until the last possible moment to pack. Cats do know what suitcases mean. Since all of our cats have picked us, I can’t say that I prefer either male or female.

Currently we have 2 boys and 1 girl. The girl, Getty Goo Goo, hates all boys. The boys, Freddie and BB, just want to be loved. The boys follow me all over the yard and are more responsive. All 3 cats adopted us. Not sure if they were feral, but they are all from Malaekahana. Appears people drop off their unwanted kittens at the park and somehow they find their way to our door. I just found a black and white kitten in the chicken coop today!
