The University of Hawaii’s flagship Manoa campus is now offering “Active Shooter Awareness & Response Training” to interested faculty, staff or student groups on the campus.
According to an announcement distributed on Wednesday, participants in the the 2-hour sessions will:
– Learn about various active shooter situations
– Discuss measures and options that can be taken to reduce the
likelihood of victimization– Learn what to expect when DPS and law enforcement arrive on
scene– Engage with DPS staff to learn about campus safety
More advice is given on the campus’ Department of Public Safety website.
The short version: “When an active shooter is in your vicinity…Run, Hide, Fight”
One problem that’s obvious off the bat is that there’s a disconnect between the straight forward advice offered and the realities of the Manoa campus.
For example, one key piece of advice is to hide and lock the door if an active shooter is believed to be in the area.
But I’m told that many, perhaps most UH classrooms can’t be locked from the inside. And those walls of glass windows on the ground floors aren’t designed for security.
You can see that there’s going to be an emerging field of security-conscious architecture for gun-crazed society.

So will some idiot actually argue that more guns and concealed carry in Hawaii are the solutions to fatal shootings?
yes. it doesn’t matter if someone points out their lies and shows the evidence. these gun idiots keep lying. they live in a tiny world and they do not care about other people. people like this can only learn by repeating mistakes that already have been made; they would have to lose their daughter in a shooting before they would realize more guns makes no sense at all.
I work on the second floor of a private office building. There is only one elevator and two stairway. We already talked about what we are going to do; 1) lock the front door; 2) Get heavy metal desk and barricade front door; 3) find your weapon of choice, mine is a 3 d-cell mag-light flashlight, my co-worked has a baseball bat, another said he is going to swing the ornamental samurai sword in his office (we told him to sharpen the thing); 4) assume ambush positions; 4) get mad; and 5) initiate melee when the bad guy comes through the front door. I don’t know how we are going to react if it does happen, but its good to at least have a plan. Maybe we need to do a practice run (without the melee part).
This kind of training was offered to staffers at the State Capitol prior to the 2015 session.
Of course it can happen here. We are not immune to crazies. I think the training is good. And do something to classroom doors so they can be secured.
@Ketchup: Why do you label the active shooter awareness and training seminar as being “paranoia and stupidity?” Have you already forgotten about the 1999 Xerox building mass shooting incident on this island? This kind of unexpected gun violence can and has happened here, and being in denial about it isn’t going to change that.
Fine, if you don’t want to attend the seminar, then at least watch the 5 minute video on the DPS website. That’s better than only starting to think about what to do the moment you hear bullets being fired. “Stupidity” is being totally unprepared for any potential crisis situation.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that a concealed pistol license (CPL) holder was not being threatened by a fleeing shoplifter when she decided to fire multiple shots at him in a Home Depot parking lot.
And experts interviewed Wednesday doubted the shooting could have been justified.
“It’s my worst nightmare as a CPL instructor,” said Doreen Hankins, owner of Detroit Arms, which holds CPL classes. “You have to know the entire situation before you pull that handgun out. And I don’t see that a shoplifter at Home Depot fills any of those criteria.”
