Throwback Thursday: On the next street in Kahala

It’s interesting to have moved back to the home where I grew up.

Here’s another pair of photos taken in approximately the same spot but separated by 60+ years.

Both are taken along Waiohinu Drive in Kahala, which forms small loop off of Makaiwa Street. This is on the side of the loop, closest to the ocean.

The house directly across Makaiwa Street from this section of Waiohinu backs up directly to our house, which faces Kealaolu.

When I was growing up, before the era of rock walls, we could just slip through the hedge that separated our houses, walk along the neighbors’ driveway, and were back there by the corner of Makaiwa and Waiohinu.

The bottom photo was taken earlier this week at about the same spot. You can see the same house in the background, although now large trees have grown up on both sides of the street.

So there you have it, both change and continuity, side by side.

In the photo, I’m actually holding my umbrella. I carry it on our early walk most mornings, except when it is extremely clear. Another time of day, and the bottle of wine scenario is quite plausible.
