Continuing airport woes

We stepped off a United Airlines fight from SFO yesterday afternoon and made the walk to baggage claim area “H” where I believe all United flights disgorge their bags.

As we made the turn from the main lobby over to the escalators that go down to baggage claim, Meda exclaimed that both escalators were actually working!

We’re used to one or the other being out of service. It seems to happen quite often. But today, they were working. Maybe things are looking up at HNL!

No such luck.

As we headed down the escalator and looked ahead, more same-old, same-old.

There are two automatic doors into the baggage claim.

You can see this coming. One door has a prominent “Out of Order” sign.

Maintenance apparently a continuing problem at Hawaii’s flagship airport.

give it 30 years, when Hawaii’s population is older and even more folks are retired.

“out of order” will be the state motto. you need workers to pay for stuff, and Uncle Danny is goney. significant tourism growth is strictly limited. military won’t always have funding

Kinda like the sign on the door to the Chinatown police substation, which has for many, many months proclaimed that the toilet is clogged. No wonder the streets all smell like piss and worse. Poor cops must have to hold it till their shifts end. Unless someone’s just lying to keep the bums out. They just sprawl across the sidewalks outside and mutter. So much for the sit-lie ban hysteria. How much would they save by just ending the charade and closing that useless station and giving back the comandeered parking spaces?

Try my park – ladies room. One toilet out of service with yellow tape across the door for months. One sink out of service for months. Floor absolutely filthy. Where kids hang out waiting for their event to start the floor is perpetually filthy. Water fountains throughout the park – broken and even the grounds people won’t drink out of them when they do work occasionally.
Nothing I ever saw was as bad as the Kailua Beach Park restrooms. Absolutely disgusting for more than 10 years. Count me as not a fan of our government system. A dem but disgusted.

I arrived on Hawaiian from Vegas and the ONE moving walkway that I know of in the airport did not work…went to the restroom and after washing hands….no paper towels in FOUR dispensers. I wish I was surprised but I’m not…

That’s what when you get one party rule for many years. How long did Mexico have one party rule before a change??? Then a change comes and it can’t be fixed because of all the old rules…

Our problem in Hawaii is that, while we want the shiny, blingy stuff for all our buildings, we are not very good in maintaining them.

And even if we do want to maintain it, and fix it up to spec, the cost associated with the fix sends everyone into a frenzy.

Just think of what it’s going to be like, in about 15 years after it opens, the maintenance needs of the Honolulu Rail System. If you need a hint, I refer to any of the BART – San Francisco or Metro – DC stations and the condition of their trains.

I don’t think its a ” party” issue, but could it be a “cultural” issue, not carrying for things in Hawaii?

@Patty – its a work culture issue, built up over decades due to the lack of accountability in our public sector workforce.

About 6 years ago, I had a situation where I was simultaneously attending classes at UH Manoa and HPU’s downtown campus. In that approximately 2 year period, I never went into a men’s restroom at UH that did not have at least one urinal or sink out of order. During the same period, there was only one sink or urinal I observed at HPU that broke. It was repaired within the week.

No matter how long an escalator or door at the airport is broken, it’s essentially guaranteed that no one will ever be disciplined.
