Has Amazon changed its delivery to Hawaii?

I got this inquiry from a friend yesterday asking whether I’ve noticed a change in Amazon.

If there has been a change, I wonder if this due to the new collection of general excise tax?

I just wanted to check in and ask if you’ve used Amazon in the last week or two.

I’ve tried to order recently and only 1 of 11 items was shown as being deliverable to Hawaii at numerous addresses – including items I’ve purchased before.

I talked to Amazon a couple times (yes a phone call is possible) over the last week and finally got the answer that since their shipping infrastructure has changed many products which now ship direct from 3rd party sellers will not ship to Hawaii (or Alaska) due to those companies’ own policies.

Alibaba is known for this shipping system where they don’t warehouse nearly as much as Amazon has historically, incidentally.

Curious what your experience is in this, if any.

Anyone have personal experience to add?

Maybe it is just the Christmas rush, but I have just gotten two notices of “Delivery Attempted” “notice left”. At non usual (2pm) delivery times @(730am, 10:30am) and NO notice was left. This was USPS and I know my carrier, he came late (Xmas rush) and did not know of the items. Is Amazon using 3rd party delivery w/ a USPS tracking number? I even left a hand written, signed note to leave the item in the garage. No Joy.

I noticed since around Nov 2017, many amazon order shipped by USPS percel post which takes at least three weeks to reach to Hawaii. I used to love amazon prime but now make me to think if I want to continue membership.

I live near Naalehu on the southern Big Island of Hawaii and prior to November 2017 I noticed almost all my online orders from Amazon and CVS end up stopping at the CA shore USPS in San Francisco or ?? and then take 3-4 plus weeks to swim over. We have PO Boxes here no postal delivery. The post office folks smile and say yes 4 to 8 weeks now. I see UPS and FedEx deliveries still happening in our community. I talked to Amazon, then supervisors and pretty much get the run around. Why do I have Prime Membership? I’m looking to go direct in ordering and skipping Amazon – Too bad – Maybe if we all start stiffing Amazon they might get the idea we are still a part of the US and once again give us the service of using UPS and FedEx expedited shipping. I am willing to pay $10 for faster shipping but never have the choice. Oh well Island Style still can’t be beat – Aloha

I have been ordering things from amazon for years. I did all my shopping their rather than in stores. Now I am being told to use third party expensive dealers in order to get my product sent to Hawaii. That’s BS.

Amazon has definitely changed it shipping to Hawaii. I am a prime member and I tried ordering the things I ordered before and now it says it requires special handling and cannot be shipped to Hawaii. I ordered tires with free shipping and now they charge 59.95 for shipping if eligible. They also raised the prime membership to $119. I will be canceling my membership!

Yes had amazon from the get go. They are now restricting majority of my shipments and wont even allow me to pay the difference. Plus tax? Where is the tax going to? Who audits them? Half the time they have been sending me incomplete items…. the states should enact a regulation for large entities such as Amazon since they are shutting down our brick and mortar companies and not paying state taxes.

There’s definitely a concerted effort by Amazon to strip shipping to Hawaii. I called on an order I had placed where the item was sold by and shipped by Amazon and asked them what reason they had for not sending it to Hawaii. I got the runaround about how the laws may not allow it, it may be a hazardous material, it may be out sized, etc. None of those applied. For two weeks I kept following up with them by phone when I got boilerplate non-answers via email. I finally found someone who was able to locate a code used to designate the reason they are unable to ship an item. She would not tell me what the code meant. But she did refund my Prime membership fee for the year after I explained that I was not getting what I paid for.
The reason they are not shipping things is very easy to see. Shipping some things to Hawaii is detrimentel to their bottom line. If they can collect Prime membership fees and only ship the cheap stuff, why would they spend more to ship the heavier items? Never mind the fact that that’s what they promise when they sell you your membership.

I’ve found Amazon’s Hawaii shipping to be wildly variable. It looks to me that sometimes even heavy things come via 2-day air, perhaps depending on whether there’s room in a shipping container. I can say this because I once placed an experimental order of cat litter, and it came by air. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to predict whether it will be two days or two weeks. Although, to be honest, the two week delays appear to have been due to the product not being ready to ship, rather than slow shipping.

In answer top your question, the item was a 7 quart dutch oven weighing 10 lbs (which the representative acknowledged would not have been a factor). It was listed at about $80. It’s now listed at $129.99 … and I ultimately purchased it online from Walmart for $45, and received in two days with free shipping.
