Today is my birthday, so I decided to dig back for one of those “long ago” photos. I laughed when I found this one of a group of then under-age students drinking beer in the woods just outside of Walla Walla, Washington. Judging by the clothes we’re wearing and the people in the group, it was likely the fall of 1966. We were fraternity brothers of Delta Tau Delta at Whitman College, and we returned periodically at a spot we called “Delta Island” with a keg of cold beer and a bunch of people. The guys in this motley assembly went on to distinguished careers in a number of different fields. At least a couple have already passed away. We probably should have been studying, but this was definitely more fun.

Wasn’t the drinking age back then 18? I know it was 18 when I graduated from high school in 1970, and then it got raised to 21 (but after I was already 21 or thereafter). The good ole days!
Nope. Drinking age in Washington at the time was 21. In Hawaii, I believe it was 20.
Sounds like a typical college frat. Party.
Happy Birthday to you.
In many states at that time you could buy alcohol but you could not vote at 18. Now you can vote at 18 but you can’t drink until 21.
I’m not sure we made the right choice.
