Wandering in downtown Auckland

Meda’s schedule at the University of Auckland did leave us at least a couple of hours every day to wander around the central business district. We haven’t been very adventurous, and haven’t made it out into the surrounding areas except to visit a cousin.

So here are a few more photos to give a flavor of Auckland. I’ll make up a full batch of pictures when we get back to Honolulu. Our flight is tomorrow night (Saturday evening in Auckland), and we arrive back in Honolulu on Saturday morning, island time.

The shops and restaurants reflect the city’s diversity. Korean, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Japanese, and Indian restaurants feel like they’re everywhere. We’ve seen a couple of Mexican spots, but the one we tried was sorely lacking in any semblance of Mexican taste, and we’ve been hesitant to try again.

There are also several big construction projects downtown, including a tunneling project for their rail system and a giant block redevelopment near the downtown transit hub.

And if you can read the sign in one of those photos, a downtown parking lot charges $8 per 30 minutes. Ouch. No wonder why mass transit is heavily used here.

Anyway, just click below to browse through these photos.

Wish you’d taken one of the ferries over to Devonport and/or Waiheke Island, to see something other than the less than stellar downtown Auckland.

Both places quite lovely, and ferries leaving right in downtown AKL
    Cheers,
Anne, who lived on Waiheke Island for nearly 10 years.

That was on our list, but Meda’s schedule was somewhat constraining. Next time….And I’ll remember to get in touch with you a we’re planning.
