A tree named Bob

Last year at this time, I made a note to myself to find out the story behind the huge lighted tree in the front yard of a home on Pueo Street. As you come down Pahoa Avenue from Kaimuki, or drive past Kahala Mall on the elevated section of the freeway, you can’t miss seeing this this tree at night. I told myself that next year, I should talk to the owners of the house and get the story of the tree.

My Civil Beat column this week is the tale of Bob, the tree on Pueo Street, which has been draped with lights each Christmas for nearly two decades. It’s not my normal subject, but it was fun to write.

You can read it here (“Ian Lind: How A Tree Named Bob Became A Blue Beacon Of Christmas“).

Thank you so much for that column.

Each year since I’ve discovered Bob I’ve taken my elderly friend down Pueo to visit that ‘tree of pure delight.’ My friend is nearly blind now, but Bob is big enough and bright enough that she can still experience its beauty. I am so grateful when I see her joy.

Thank you, Schulz family, for your generous and compassionate nature.

And thank you, Mr. Hu, for the heavy lifting.

    Blessings to all,
    J
