One person’s trash….

Message from a reader:

Totally unrelated, but in light of your “quite a hike” comment the other day: The featured story on the SA website about a potential new rubbish collection fee utilizes a photo apparently lifted at random from the web and not taken in Hawaii, depicting an abandoned home with a pile of discarded bulky items at the curb — none of which has anything to do with a new fee for regular rubbish collection in Honolulu.

Has the SA really cut the photo staff that much?

It may seem manini, but fake news is a slippery slope. This is a really bad precedent. And it’s just really, really lame.

The reader is correct. The photo has absolutely nothing to do with regular trash pickup in Honolulu.

The photo, from Pixabay.com. I checked the title of the image, and it turns out to have been taken in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas last year. It is one of several free photos of Harvey featured on Pixabay, and turns up if you search for “Hurricane Harvey” on the site.

And, yes, it is really lame.

Pixabay.com supplies free pictures. A great example of you get what you pay for.
When the newspaper starts cutting things like the graphics budget it might as well start using “volunteer journalists” and dump the reporters too.

The Star-Bulletin and Advertiser at one point had more than 200 journalists working in Hawaii. There are now fewer than 100 at the Star-Advertiser. What the hell do we expect?
